Are you confident that your staff really care about the work they do? Are they excited to come to work each day? Do they understand the influence their work has on your company, and does it inspire them to do their best work?  In other words, are they—to use perhaps the hottest buzzword in HR today—”engaged“?

For the leaders on the 2014 ranking of the Best Small and Medium Employers in Canada (BSME), the answer to  the above questions are “yes,” “yes,” “yes” and an emphatic, underlined, boldfaced “YES!”

Produced by Aon Hewitt and the Queen’s School of Business Centre for Business Venturing in partnership with PROFIT Magazine and PROFITguide.com, the BSME program ranks participating companies by their employee-engagement scores and other factors, as measured by surveys of each firm’s employees, HR team and executives. The program is open to companies with 50 to 399 Canadian employees.

These organizations have turned their employees into hyper-engaged superstars by using a variety of tips, tactics and strategies, of which you can read more in the pages that follow (and on PROFITguide.com in early 2014).

Whether you’re keen to attract the best and brightest to your company, you want to reduce turnover or you simply want to turn a good staff into a great one, you’d do well to follow the lead of the BSME class of 2014.
