Open to Canadian business owners under the age of 30, the FuEL Awards celebrate the successes of young Canadian entrepreneurs, identify role models for progressive business management and inspire youth to make entrepreneurship their No. 1 career choice. The 2012 FuEL Awards were produced by PROFIT Magazine and Impact Entrepreneurship Group, with the support of national sponsors KPMG Enterprise and TD Bank Group; and strategic partner CYBF’s Chairman’s Awards for Best Business.

Candidates completed an online application that gathered information about their companies and products, business practices and financial performance. Applicant generated profiles of the candidates were posted at the competition website (fuelawards.ca) for voting by the public, and the full applications were reviewed by the judges.

Preliminary judging was conducted by members of Impact Entrepreneurship Group. The 35 candidates receiving the highest preliminary scores were subsequently reviewed by the national selection committee to determine the 20 FuEL Award winners and the FuEL Entrepreneur of the Year.

Applications were judged using the following criteria (share of total score):

  • Product/service innovation (25%)
  • Commercial results/potential (25%)
  • Community-building and social responsibility (15%)
  • Employment practices/job creation (15%)
  • Total public votes (20%)
